The Downcast App is a fantastic podcast player available for iOS, Mac, Apple Watch, and CarPlay. It is regarded as the best iOS podcast app for macOS. Today, I’d like to share my experience with the Downcast app, now available for macOS. With Downcast, you can easily download, play, and sync your favorite podcasts through an intuitive interface designed specifically for this purpose. I own the Downcast app on my iPhone 17 and a 2023 MacBook Pro, and this is my first time using it on my laptop. So far, the app runs smoothly on my MacBook. Downcast App stands out as a superior podcasting app because it gives you a tremendous amount of control over how it manages (1) your podcast library, (2) individual podcast behaviors, and (3) episode-specific settings. You can adjust playback speeds in 1/4x increments from 1/2x to 3x. It also offers features to skip ads and bumper music at the beginning and end of episodes, allowing you to fine-tune your listening experience. Additionally, you can import MP3 and M4A files to create your own podcast collection and auto-generate playlists.
The app provides excellent control over the delivery of episodes from various podcasts, making it particularly useful for listening while driving. I’ve previously reached out to the developer via email, and he responded promptly. It’s worth noting that the developer supports this app as a side project, so he does not take feature requests.
My only issue arose when I first installed the app and turned on iCloud; it downloaded podcasts for which I had previously disabled auto-refresh. However, after that initial download, the Downcast App for Mac followed the settings I’d put in place. Overall, the app works well and does not have the various bugs and issues that plague many other macOS podcast apps. In particular, I find the interface to be well-designed and much more user-friendly than the default macOS Podcast app.
